Free Look Period

by Dr. Gaurav Sinha & Mr. Vinay Kohli  ·  Unit 30 of 33
Buying a health insurance policy is an important financial decision, and it is natural for policyholders to review the policy carefully after receiving the official documents. Sometimes, despite comparing different plans before purchase, customers may later discover that certain features, exclusions, waiting periods, or policy conditions do not match their expectations. To protect the interests of policyholders and promote transparency in the insurance industry, the **Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI)** has introduced the concept of the **Free Look Period**. The Free Look Period is a specified duration during which a policyholder can carefully examine the policy document after receiving it. If, after reviewing the terms and conditions, the policyholder finds the policy unsuitable or disagrees with any of its provisions, they have the right to cancel the policy and request a refund, subject to the insurer's terms and applicable deductions. This provision ensures that customers are not forced to continue with a policy they do not fully understand or accept. The purpose of the Free Look Period is to give policyholders enough time to verify that the policy they have purchased matches what was explained by the insurance company or the insurance advisor. During this period, customers can review important details such as the sum insured, waiting periods, exclusions, premium amount, policy duration, claim settlement process, co-payment clauses, hospital network, and additional benefits included in the plan. The Free Look Period generally begins **from the date on which the policyholder receives the policy document**. In most cases, the duration of this period is **15 days**, although the applicable duration may vary depending on the mode of purchase and prevailing regulatory guidelines. It is therefore advisable for policyholders to check the exact Free Look Period mentioned in their policy document. Suppose a customer purchases a health insurance policy online after reading a brief summary of its features. Once the policy document arrives, they carefully review the detailed terms and discover that the waiting period for pre-existing diseases is longer than expected or that certain important treatments are excluded from coverage. Instead of remaining locked into the policy, the customer can exercise the Free Look option and request cancellation within the prescribed period if they are not satisfied. To make use of the Free Look Period, the policyholder must formally inform the insurance company of their intention to cancel the policy. Most insurers provide a dedicated policy cancellation or Free Look request form on their official websites. The policyholder is generally required to mention the reason for cancellation, provide policy details, and submit supporting information required by the insurer. The request usually includes important details such as the date on which the policy document was received, policy number, reason for cancellation, details of the insurance intermediary or agent (if applicable), and the bank account information into which the refundable premium should be credited. Providing complete and accurate information helps the insurer process the cancellation request efficiently. Along with the cancellation request, insurers generally require the submission of the **original policy document**, proof of the first premium payment, valid identity documents, and a cancelled cheque or bank account details for processing the refund. If the original policy document has been misplaced, some insurers may ask the policyholder to submit an indemnity bond or other prescribed declaration before proceeding with the cancellation. It is important to understand that the refund provided under the Free Look Period is usually **not equal to the entire premium paid**. Insurance companies are permitted to deduct certain charges before refunding the balance amount. These deductions may include the premium applicable for the period during which risk coverage was provided, applicable stamp duty charges, and the cost of any medical examination conducted before issuing the policy, if such an examination was arranged by the insurer. The remaining premium is then refunded to the policyholder according to the insurer's procedures. The Free Look Period offers several important benefits to policyholders. It promotes transparency by encouraging customers to read the complete policy document instead of relying only on marketing brochures or verbal explanations. It also provides an opportunity to identify errors in personal details, nominee information, policy benefits, or coverage terms before the policy continues for the long term. Another advantage is that it strengthens consumer confidence in the insurance industry. Customers know they have an opportunity to reconsider their purchase after reviewing the official policy wording. This encourages insurers to communicate policy features clearly and reduces the likelihood of misunderstandings between insurers and policyholders. However, policyholders should remember that the Free Look Period is available only for a **limited duration**. Once this period expires, the policy continues according to its terms and conditions. Any cancellation requested after the Free Look Period is generally treated as a normal policy cancellation and may be subject to different rules regarding surrender, cancellation, or refund, depending on the insurer and the type of policy purchased. Before deciding to cancel a policy, customers should carefully compare the existing policy with available alternatives. Sometimes a misunderstanding can be resolved simply by discussing the policy features with the insurer or insurance advisor. If the policy genuinely does not meet the individual's healthcare needs or financial objectives, exercising the Free Look option within the prescribed period provides a convenient solution. The Free Look Period should not be viewed merely as a cancellation facility. Instead, it should be seen as an important consumer protection mechanism that encourages informed decision-making. It gives policyholders the confidence to purchase insurance while knowing they have a reasonable opportunity to review the contract in detail before making a long-term commitment. Ultimately, the Free Look Period reflects the insurance industry's commitment to fairness, transparency, and customer satisfaction. By carefully reviewing the policy document immediately after receiving it and taking timely action whenever necessary, policyholders can ensure that the health insurance plan they retain truly matches their healthcare needs, financial goals, and long-term expectations.
