What are stock splits and bonus shares?

A stock split increases the number of shares held by existing shareholders by dividing each share into multiple shares while proportionately reducing the price per share. Bonus shares are additional shares issued to existing shareholders without any extra payment, based on their current holdings. Although both increase the number of shares owned, they do not immediately change the total value of the investment.
